OLD STRUAN, by Pitlochry for Atholl Estates......
Our brief was to create a dwelling type suitable for local families living and working in the area. The concept was to develop a simple yet modern and flexible design aesthetic suited to Highland Perthshire....one that could be easily extended or modified to suit a growing family.
Located approximately 1.5 miles off the A9 trunk road, this small development of six new houses was cut into the topography of the gently sloping site to reduce their impact on the surrounding landscape and to provide a simple rural relationship with the adjoining track. The individual orientation of the units was determined to maximise the views and to allow privacy.
These homes are of timber frame construction with part wet-dash render finish and part timber cladding using both slate and profiled zinc roofing.
The visual impact of oil tanks etc is lessened with the use of hazel screening and chestnut fencing which separates the plots. The colours are crisp but quiet and the mix of materials and scale helps to bed the buildings into the landscape.
